MediaTomb for Solaris 11

MediaTomb LogoMediaTomb 0.12.1 is an open source (GPL) UPnP/DLNA MediaServer. I've used it to stream video and audio to a Playstation 3, Samsung Smart TV's and WD TV Live devices but all, if not most, DLNA/UPnP devices will work. Transcoding and thumbnailing are also supported.

The installation of MediaTomb also delivers the required files and configuration to run it as a Solaris SMF service. Continue reading to get MediaTomb running as a service on your Solaris 11 environment.

Screen Capture on Solaris 11

Solaris 11 LogoThere are two (2) tools available from my package repository for doing a screen capture on Solaris 11. These are recordMyDesktop and FFmpeg. I've used both in the past but prefer FFmpeg over recordMyDesktop.

I've created a script that does all the hard work for me. I use xwininfo to get all the relevant window information and FFmpeg with the x11grab filter to record the screen. The script is shown below for those interested.

I've saved the script with the filename "recorder" on my system. You need to pass it two (2) command line arguments. The first is the destination filename, eg. "easytag-2.1.7". The second is the path to a flac sound file. MP3 files don't work. The SOX package that ships with Solaris 11 doesn't appear to have MP3 support.
